Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried visited South Florida community centers this week to bring attention to food insecurity issues and show support for programs that serve healthy food to children during summer months.
Fried, whose department oversees the Fresh From Florida campaign, attended a Summer BreakSpot event on Tuesday, and helped served food to some of the children.
The Summer BreakSpot program at the Kay Gaither Community Center in Hollywood provides free summer meals for children under 18 and has been doing so for 10 years. Hollywood Comissioner Linda Sherwood emphasized some of the children may not get healthy meals at home.
“About 19 percent of the kids in this state are food insecure,” she said.
